Hoodoo Style Recipes

As time moves along, and we have an opportunity to learn how other witches, cultures, religions and traditions work with magick, we are adapting and changing our recipes to adapt with the times. To follow original recipes is difficult in folk magic systems, as the recipes are passed along via the spoken word, and will also be adapted according to what was available for use in the practitioners location.

For this reason, there is NO standard or “correct” recipe. In Hoodoo, we see “associations” trying to become the global association for “best hoodoo practices’. I could say more, but I won’t. Instead, if you are interested in getting into or researching traditional African based magical/spiritual traditions and see for yourself how religion and magic is used, I suggest you look into the Yoruba path (West AFRICA), if only for enlightenment.

Did you know………. Cuban Santeria; Haitian Vodun (voodoo); Brazilian Candomble; Trinidad and Tobago Shango are all Yoruba or Orisha based.

All of these religions are African derived religions having different names in different countries. They combine beliefs from the Kabbalah and Yoruba speaking peoples of West/Central Africa, with elements of Catholicism or Anglicanism. Even some Hinduism is included in Trinidad, because of the East Indian influence in that country.

  • 2 parts Myrrh essential oil
  • 1 part Sweet Flag|
  • Calamus essential oil – half of the foregoing total weight Olive oil

Ancestor Powder

Use a clean dry glass jar.

  • Burn a Photo of  your Ancestor  to ash and place in jar
  • A pinch of Graveyard dirt from their grave
  • A large pinch of Loveage
  • A large pinch of Angelica Root

Sit the jar on your ancestor altar in front of their photo. While you are connecting with them each week, ask them to assist you with your magic, when requested, when you use the ancestor powder.

I would leave the powder on the altar for as long as possible or until you feel some “energy” in the powder.

How to Make Egg Shell Powder

Supplies:

  • The shells of 6 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon very hot tap water
  • 1 teaspoon flour
  • 1 clean rock Sheet of paper
  • Spoon
  • Cup
  • Paper towel

TIP – (You can grind them in a coffee grinder or food processor too).

Directions:

  1. Wash the eggshells well, so they do not have any egg left in them. Let them dry for an hour. The shells must be completely dry, or the chalk will fall apart.
  2. Place a sheet of paper on a hard surface. Grind the shells on the paper with a rock. Make sure the rock is clean so you don’t get dirt ground in with the eggshells.
  3. Continue grinding the eggshells until you have a fine powder. Make sure you have enough powder to fill a large spoon, which is enough for one stick of chalk.
  4. When you have enough of the fine powder to make a stick of chalk, sift or pick up little bits of eggshells that are not ground up and throw them away. Leaving in little bits of eggshells may cause your chalk to break up.
  5. Put the teaspoon of flour and the teaspoon of hot water into a cup. Stir together to make a paste.
  6. Add the spoonful of eggshell powder into the paste and mix well. It may help to mash it with the back of the spoon.
  7. Add a few drops of food coloring if you want colored chalk. Too many drops will make the paste too wet.
  8. On a clean, dry surface roll the mixture into a stick.
  9. Wrap the stick up in a strip of paper towel and set aside to dry. Drying takes about three days.
  10. Peel the paper off one end and you’re ready.

VAN VAN OIL

The ingredients for Van Van Oil have always varied from maker to maker, but the absence of any one or two of the Asian Grass oils will not hurt the results much, for usually the blend will focus on citrusy lemongrass and citronella, with only a hint of musky vetivert, floral palmarosa, and spicy gingergrass.

  • 16 parts lemongrass oil
  • 8 parts citronella oil
  • 1 part vetivert oil
  • 1 part palmarosa oil
  • 1 part gingergrass oil if you can get it

Mix together and let sit for at least week. This is your stock oil. Do not apply it directly, for like all uncut essential oils, it can be a skin irritant to some people.

Therefore:

In each 1/2 oz. bottle of VAN VAN OIL to be made up, place a pinch of dried lemongrass leaves, a pinch of crushed pyrite crystal sone full standard dropper-full of the above stock blend

Fill the bottle with undyed almond oil as a carrier
