Moon Spells
Dark Moon
The Dark moon is best for “black magick”.
Binding Spell
The purpose of this spell is to rid yourself of the negative energies of someone who is mentally or emotionally abusing you. If done properly, it will not harm the object of the spell nor will it affect his or her daily life in any way. It will simply make the person powerless to mentally or emotionally harm you.
Preform when Moon is dark
Materials:
Small cloth doll,(poppet) leave the head unstitched until you are ready to begin the ritual Needle and thread
Some personal item from the person you want to bind (fingernail clippings, hair, handwriting sample)
- Black ribbon
- Black candle
- Cauldron or other fireproof container
- Sterilized needle
- Piece of parchment paper and pen or quill
- One candle at each quarter (optional)
Ritual:
Call the quarters – I like to use candles at each quarter to form a circle of fire for extra protection. Light the black candle Concentrating deeply on the person you are binding, place the personal object inside the head of the doll and sew it shut.
Tie the black ribbon around the poppet’s head, signifying the binding of that person.
‘With harm to none, my will be done
I hereby bind you (name of person)
Your words cannot harm me
Your thoughts cannot harm me
You cannot harm me’
Continue chanting this or something like it until you feel power surging through you. Visualize the person helpless to slander or verbally and mentally abuse you while you are chanting.
~ Now, to bind the spell ~
If you have a sigil or a craft name, sign it on the small piece of paper. If not, sign your own full name. If others are working the ritual with you, they too should sign the paper.
With the sterilized needle, prick one of your fingers and put a small drop of blood over your signature. Again, if others are working with you, they should place a drop of blood over their signatures. (using a different needle, of course)
The waning moon
The waning moon is the period during which the moon goes from full to dark once again. Like the waxing moon phase, it lasts approximately two weeks. This time of the month is used to do “baneful” magic — that which sends away, gets rid of or destroys things you no longer wish to be burdened by.
Some examples would include:
- Spells to eliminate negative people or toxic relationships from your life
- Workings to smoothly end a relationship or job
- Rituals that banish bad habits
- Any magic related to reducing things, such as debt, illness, etc.
The new moon
The new moon is sometimes tricky to work with because you can’t always see it during this phase – it will appear as a very faint crescent of silver low on the horizon, if you can see it at all. For approximately three days during each lunar cycle, after the moon has waned, it goes dark before waxing again. This is considered a time to conduct wish spells.
Some examples might include:
- Cleansing and purifying of the body and mind
- Rituals that designate sacred space
- Any magic related to inner harmony and peace
The waxing moon
The waxing moon is the period during which the moon grows from dark to full. It takes approximately fourteen days for this to happen. It’s the time of the moon to perform “positive” magic — in other words, spells that draw things to you, or increases things.
Some examples would include:
- A money spell
- A working to get a new job or home
- Bringing love into one’s life
The Full Moon
The full moon is the point at which we can see an entire side of the moon. For magical purposes, many modern Wiccans consider the full moon to include the day before and the day after a full moon, for a total of three days. This is a good time to do rituals focused on personal growth and spiritual development.
Some examples would include:
- Spells related to increasing your intuitive awareness
- Healing magic
- Rituals that connect you closely with God or Goddess, such as Drawing Down the Moon
- Any magic related to developing your magical skills
- Hold an Esbat Rite – Celebrate the Full Moon
A Full Moon Power Spell
…..this spell can be performed indoors as well as outside. It is representational since you use a paper moon or flower.
In the incantation, the Moon is represented as a white swan.
This should be done at the time of the Full Moon and is designed to bring the energy of the Moon within your grasp until the next Full Moon.
You will need
- A BOWL OF WATER
WHITE PAPER MOON OR FLOWER
Method
Float the paper moon or flower in the bowl.
Raise the bowl towards the Moon in the sky and say:
Hail to thee white swan on the river.
Present life, tide turner,
Moving through the streams of life, all hail.
Mother of old and new days,
To you, through you, this night we cling to your aura.
Pure reflection, total in belief, touched by your presence, I am in your power and wisdom.
Praise your power, your peace, my power, my peace. I am strong. I praise. I bless.
Replace the bowl on your altar. Stand for a few moments appreciating the power of the Moon.
This spell is purely an incantation to the Moon and is therefore very simple. It needs no other tools or techniques except a physical representation of the Moon. Water is sacred to the Moon and therefore we offer her that which belongs to her.
A Welcome to the Full Moon – Goddess Ritual
First, if your tradition requires you to cast a circle, do so at this time. If you don’t normally cast a circle, take the time to ritually purify the area by smudging or aspersing. This will establish the space as sacred.
Perform this ceremony outside if at all possible — it’s the best way to get a good look at the sliver of new moon.
- You’ll need a moon candle, wrapped in a black cloth, to place on your altar. This is traditionally a white unscented pillar-style candle.
- You’ll also need a hand-held mirror. Tie some silver and white ribbons on it if you wish.
- Finally, have a small bowl of Blessing Oil handy.
Hold this ceremony at sunset if you can. Turn to the west, and watch as the sun goes down (without looking directly at it). Once the sun has dropped below the horizon, you’ll be able to see where the new moon is rising – and the location is going to vary from month to month, depending on the time of year and where you live. If the sun sets before you began, you’ll need to look a bit higher in the sky, but you should still be able to find it as long as the night is a clear one.
If you’re doing this rite with children, have them each try to be the first one to spot the new moon.
Once you see the moon in the sky, unwrap the candle.
Hold it up high and say:
Welcome back, Moon!
We’re glad to see you again.
Another cycle has passed
another month has gone by
and our lives have moved forward.
Place the candle on the altar and light it, still facing the moon. Say:
Today is a new day,
and a new month begins.
As the tides flow, and the moon rises above,
we are thankful that She has returned.
She watches over us, ever constant,
yet always changing,
and we are thankful for her light.
If you have children present, have them wave to the moon and thank her for returning — you’d be amazed how silly and fun this simple task can become!
Next, turn to face east, where the sun will rise in the morning. Pick up the mirror and hold it so you can see the new moon behind you. Say:
Bring us your wisdom, your guidance,
your protection, in the coming month.
You are behind me at every step,
watching and guiding me,
and I am thankful.
Place the mirror back on the altar, beside the moon candle. Take a moment to reflect on your goals. After all, this is a time of new beginnings and a good time for new commitments and vows.
Warm the Blessing Oil over the candle for just a moment, and then anoint each others’ foreheads. As you do so, say:
May the blessings of the moon be with you.
If you are working alone, anoint your own forehead, and grant yourself the blessings of the moon.
When you are ready, close the circle and end the ritual.
If you choose, you can move Cakes & Ale ceremony.
Tips:
Decorate your altar with silvers and whites to celebrate the return of the moon
If you’re doing this rite as a family, the eldest female relative present should light the moon candle.
