Belphegor, Lord of the Gap
Belphegor is a demon with the ability to grant powers to make discoveries, inventions, and to acquire wealth. He is one of the seven princes of hell and is associated with gluttony within Judeo-Christian texts. He presides over 26 legions of demons. He is also referred to as the Lord of sloth (laziness) and it is posited that acts of farting or excretion honor him. It is worth noting that sloth or laziness is one of the seven cardinal sins.
Belphegor is a demon of the 2nd hierarchy of demons as consistent with his position as a prince of hell. Kabbalistic texts refer to him as the “disputer” an enemy of the sixth Sephiroth of beauty. He functions to sow discord among humans and tempt them into evil with his apportioning of wealth. His name is associated with licentiousness and he symbolizes misanthropy.

History
Belphegor is the 17th demon of the Dictionnaire Infernal. The historical origins of this demon are the Assyrian god Baal-Peor who is actually a Moabite god. Baal-Peor was worshipped as a giant phallus and associated with orgies and adulterous behavior. Christian scriptures posit that the Jews became attached to him in Shittim after associating with the Moabites on Mount Peor (Numbers 25: 1-3).
The 11th century French rabbi Shlomo Itzhaki / Rashi also mentions Belphegor within the Talmud. He cites, “Peor was so named because before it they bared their anus before it and releived themselves. This was the manner of its worship”. The name Belphegor therefore came about as a result of Latinization of the name Baal-Peor and the Judeo-Christian propensity to equate the gods of other cultures to the residents of hell.
His association with the act of defecation has seen Belphegor linked with the god Pet (fart) as well as Crepitus who is the alleged Roman god of flatulence. He has also been linked to Priapus who is a fertility god with a permanent erection. As the antithesis of the sixth Sephiroth of beauty, Belphegor is the anti-force of the heart Tipereth and the Sun and thus referred to as a Qlippoth.
The reason for Belphegor’s presence on earth is however slightly humorous. It is posited that Belphegor was sent to earth from hell in order to find out whether marital bliss actually existed. He is said to have found no examples of happy marriages to report to Lucifer. De Plancy’s Dictionnaire Infernal posits that Belphegor also serves as the ambassador of hell to France.
